Cabin Fever Weekend activities set for Jan. 29-Feb. 1
CHARLES CITY – Now that the excitement of the holidays have passed and the winter doldrums have set in, people in and around Charles City will have a chance to get out of the house and enjoy a variety of activities – both indoors and out – during Cabin Fever Weekend January 29th through February 1st.
Organized by the Charles City Area Chamber of Commerce, Cabin Fever Weekend is a coordinated collection of activities designed to get people back out and about the community mid-winter for some fun and fellowship. Different businesses and organizations are hosting things to do over that four-day period, with something for all ages. Some embrace the wintery outdoors like cross-country skiing, sledding, Beer Curling on the ice at the Elks Pond, and an Owl Prowl hike. Many other offerings are in indoor warmth and comfort. THURSDAY, JAN. 29
- 5:30-7:30 p.m. Floral Class at Otto’s Oasis
- 6 p.m. Puzzle Night Competition, Prologue Books & Wine, 213 North Main St.
$40 per team, prize and bragging rights for winning team. All teams will be using the same 500-piece puzzle.
FRIDAY, JAN. 30
- 3-5 p.m. Creative Stations at Charles City Arts Center
- 4-7 p.m. PAWS Open House
- 6:30 p.m. Roller skating at the Charles City Family YMCA
- 6 p.m. Snowing For Scholars fundraising event for Charles City Dollars For Scholars, Elks Lodge. Call (641) 330-8207 for tickets.
- 6 p.m. Trivia and Mocktails at the Charles City Public Library. Call to register your teams of 4 to 6 or we'll put you on a team. Trivia competition with Mocktails (non- alcoholic drinks) and light snacks.
- 7 p.m. Movie “Charlie the Wonderdog” at the Charles Theatre
SATURDAY, JAN. 31
- 10 a.m. K-Pop Party at the Charles City Public Library. Crafts, games, dances and fun show inspired treats!
- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Creative Stations at Charles City Arts Center
- 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Giant Games at Charles City Arts Center
- 11 a.m. Beer Curling at the Elks Pond. Register 3-person teams for $30 starting at 9 a.m. $300 prize for first place. Pre-register by calling 9641) 228-1257, (641) 330-5924 or emailing elks.manager@yahoo.com.
- 11 a.m. Mah Jong at Charles City Public Library. All interested are welcome. learning, beginner and experienced
- 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. PAWS Open House
- 1 p.m. Adult Dungeons & Dragons at the Charles City Public Library. Registration required.
- 1-4 p.m. Cross Country Skiing (if snow on the ground) at the Tosanak Recreation Area near Marble Rock. Cost is $5 per person, with skis available for the entire family.
- 1-3 p.m. Open Swim at the Charles City Family YMCA
- 1-3 p.m. Museum Kids: Winter at the Floyd County Museum, 500 Gilbert St. Program for elementary school-aged children. Free to attend but registration required by calling (641) 228-1099.
- 5:30 pm-7:30 pm- Snow Ball Carnival at Charles City High School. Suggested Admission: Snack Donation for CC Public Elementary Schools.
- 6 p.m. Owl Prowl at the Tosanak Recreation Area near Marble Rock. Discover what makes owls unique and go on a hike to hear owl calls with the Floyd County Naturalist. Maat at the Tosanak Learning Center. Free family outdoor program. Please dress appropriately. Online registration appreciated, but walk-ins are welcome.
- 6:30 p.m. Cabin Fever Bingo Bash at the Community Center, 900 Hulin St. Doors open at 5 p.m., Bingo begins at 6:30 p.m. sharp. Jackpot of $500 to be awarded that evening, along with door prizes. Free ham sandwiches and cookies Kids welcome if accompanied by an adult.
- 7 p.m. Movie “Charlie the Wonderdog” at the Charles Theatre
SUNDAY, FEB. 1
- 12-2 p.m. Creative Stations at Charles City Arts Center
- 12-2 p.m. Giant Games at Charles City Arts Center
- 1 p.m. Kids Movie Matinee (Charlie the Wonderdog) at the Charles Theatre
- 1-3 p.m. PAWS Open House
- 1:30-3:30 p.m. Open Swim at the Charles City Family YMCA
- 2 p.m. Charcuterie Board Wood Burning at the Rockford Fossil & Prairie Center (lower level). Participants will learn step-by-step instructions on creating a stencil, using a heat gun, and the chemical reaction needed to create a unique charcuterie board to take home. Each participant will also get to make a wooden bookmark. Fee of $25 and participants must register by 4 p.m. on January 20th, as there are limited spots available. Once registered, participants will be contacted to decide on the stencil they would like to use. Call 641-756-3490 for more information.
